My nemesis: The Monkey Bars. We moved to Missouri from Pennsylvania when I was in grade school. No playgrounds at my old school, just painted Hopscotch and Four Square games on the asphalt. The new school had it all, including the monkey bars. The other kids had two years of experience crossing the dastardly jungleContinue reading “Menacing Monkey Bars”

Watch Your Mouth
I spend a lot of time with young children. You have to watch what you say. They make Artificial Intelligence look like nothing when it comes to imitating you. The other day, while shopping with a two-year-old, listening to “Old McDonald”, she paused and shouted, “Sing it, CeCe.”, her pet name for me. Now, here’sContinue reading “Watch Your Mouth”
Slum To Seashore
#itsaharndenlife I took the long weekend from writing to visit with my two sisters at the beach. Both have experienced the same heartbreak within six months of each other, the death of their husbands. Sunshine, salt air, the sound of waves, and sister time will cure almost anything that ails you. God’s best medicine requiresContinue reading “Slum To Seashore”
A Mighty Fortress
Travel down the Rhine River in Germany, and you will see castles, castles, castles. The ones on the riverbank collected tolls from passing ships. The ones perched above provided a fortified safe haven. An advancing enemy would be sitting ducks as they tried to scale the rocky cliffs. Stone walls and moats bolstered the protectionContinue reading “A Mighty Fortress”
Three’s A Crowd??
Ever notice what a bad rap the number three gets? Three strikes and you are out; A three-ring circus; Three sheets to the wind; Three alarm fire, 3rd Wheel. Sadly, deaths seem to come in threes; one famous person dies, followed quickly by two others. Then there is our title, “Three’s A Crowd” Or is it? Find out the power in 3 in this week’s It’s a Hard life.
Wrestling Life
The other day, one of my favorite pastors preached on wrestling. Yes, wrestling. Now, this is near and dear to my heart because I went to a private high school where wrestling was king. All the big guys went to public school to play football and get a chance at a college scholarship, and that left us with a team as small as our marching band. Our wrestling team took States back-to-back for decades. If you know the sport, you have to be the exact weight of that class. If you are wrestling 120, you have to weigh precisely 120. Except for the heavyweight division, you can tip the scales from 183-285. This brings me to the sermon…
Don’t Let The Sun Go Down
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (Psalm 19:1) Elton John sang it: “Losing everything was like the sun going down on me…” One man’s loss is another’s gain. Walking my dog the other day, we came upon a young man late twenties or early thirties, young by myContinue reading “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down”
Fan of Kelliann
Newborns either love sleep or don’t sleep at all. Kelliann came home from the hospital the sleepiest baby of all time. I bragged to everyone about what a good sleeper she was, how I had to wake her to nurse her. My dad cautioned me not to be so bold. Babies change as quickly asContinue reading “Fan of Kelliann”
For Crying Out Loud
I cried for the first time on Sunday since the pandemic started. I cried hard. Sat on my bathroom floor and sobbed. It has been 6 months since I have stepped foot in a church. I have had to watch on TV with a puppy continually bringing me a ball and my older dog beggingContinue reading “For Crying Out Loud”
No Such Thing As A Good Weed
12 Apr, 2018 A week ago he lay on a sandy beach on spring break having the time of his life. Today, he lays in a county coroner’s morgue lifeless -the victim of a drug deal gone bad. A deal over marijuana. He was 17 years young, so too the young man who pulled the triggerContinue reading “No Such Thing As A Good Weed”
